Tidying Up
Season 2012 /2013 will see some new departures for the Limerick Winter League. At the moment I suppose the most important will be that no signed Junior player will be eligible to pay LWL. I would ask all clubs to note that wants a player signs a LDMC form irrespective of what division he is playing in he is not allowed to play in our league. Last year a number of clubs wanted an exception to the signed players rule. We allowed signed players who were not playing junior football to play in LWL. AS the season went on I was not happy with this arrangement as it was felt players were actually playing...

Reds 2 V Limerick Brakes 1 Both sides were fully committed and gave their all in a cracking LWL Cup Final. Reds who completed a double last season saw their League title slip away a couple of weeks ago and were in no humour to let the Cup slip away to Derek Casey’s Brakes. Reds attacked right from the start and Leslie Barrett had a brilliant effort saved by Brakes coach Derek Casey. At the other end it took an athletic save from Reds keeper Jim Fitzgerald to deny Anthony Tobin. Reds finally opened the scoring and what a goal it was. A free kick on the left from Declan Casey fell to Ballynanty...

Wembldines 2 v Lightning 0 Newcomers to the LWL this year Wembldines caused the shock of the finals night with a well deserved two nil win over Lightning. Damien Patton’s Lightning started well and looked as if they were going to take the lead when John O Sullivan cross was met on the volley by Tommy Guinan but his effort sailed well over the bar. Both sides were making buckets full of chances but great goalkeeping by Dines Mark Higgins and Lightning’s Ken O Dea kept the scores level. Dines took the lead when Peter Clarke picked out Alan Connors and he gave O Dea no chance with a smashing shot....

Limerick Brakes 3 v Craic Merchants 1 Derek Casey’s Limerick Brakes qualified for the LWL cup final when they beat Steve Gleeson’s Craic Merchants in a very competitive game. Merchants shocked the Brakes in the opening minutes when a super pass from Ger Fitzgerald saw Robbie Carey smash the ball past Brakes keeper Derek Casey. In the past few weeks the Brakes have not played well and it look as if this might continue with Cecil Prendergast and Steve Gleeson getting the upper hand in the middle of the Park for the Merchants. All that seemed to change when Thadgh Riordan lashed home past...

Superscoopers 0 v Wembledines 3 Brian McMahon’s Wembledines qualified for the Plate final in their first season in LWL. They beat a very competitive Scoopers outfit but were made to fight all the way. The Dines opened the scoring when a great cross from the left by Ex Corbally star Eoin O Sullivan found its way into the net. Scoopers came right back with Brian Morris and Tommy Walsh causing problems for Dines keeper Mark Higgins. McMahon’s side went two up coming up to the break when Barry Dwan beat two defenders and set up Alan Connors who scored with a daisy cutter. Scoopers striker Eddie...

Lightning 3 V DGalacticos 0 Lightning were very disappointed to go out of the Cup last week. However Damien Patton’s side made up for this set back with a comprehensive win over DG’s. This game was won in the first half when Lightning were completely on top. They opened the scoring within a few minutes of the start when a great ball from John Lysaight saw Tommy Guinan beat dG’s keeper John Kinsella. It was all Lightning at this stage with John Riordan Gary Cregan having efforts just off target. They went two up when Eddie Murnane pounced on a poor clearance. Dg’s tried hard but found...

Reds 4 v Briersfield 1 After been crowned Champions last week Briersfield were brought right back to earth when they were well beaten by last year Champs Reds. Brian O Regan’s Reds have been through a tough season with some of their long serving players out injured but they showed in this game that they are not about to give up the Cup without a fight. Reds got off to a flying start when a super cross from Pike Rovers top scorer Pat Moloney was blasted to the net by Mike Sillery. Reds kept the pressure on the Field defence and added number two when Greg Brosnan picked his spot from outside the...

No More Rush To Judgement
Listning to the Marian Finucane show this morning on the way to the Captains run (you all know what it is by now) I was very impressed by her interviewee Emily O Reilly. Emily O Reilly for those of you who don’t know is the Ombudsman/Women and a former Journalist and broadcaster. She was calm and very precise with her language and tone caught my attention. Finucane as she normally does probes and asks the difficult questions. Emily happened to mention that her later childhood was happy but in her early childhood she had a very difficult time. It seems that Emily found it very difficult to talk...

Saint Bridget’s day has come and gone and the Irish Spring is with us. The mornings are still on the dark side but the evenings are a bit brighter. My Mother had a saying that St Bridget herself was supposed to have said “from my day to Paddy’s day you get a hop step and a leap in the days” in other words from St Bridget’s day to Paddy’s day the brightness of the days take a hop a step and a big leap coming up to Paddy’s day. With the coming of the bright nights we all should make an effort to get out and about. We will have Junior and Schoolboy games taking place during the week....

I went on the Captains run on Saturday. The Captains run takes the form of a visit to the Milk Market then onto the Augustian and St Michaels Churches. The tradition has built up over the years before big Munster games. It’s always very exciting on match days in Thomond. I remember I played there a few times. I played for my local club Thomond and we were very successful. We never won anything in the early days as we were up against a Richmond team powered by the great Colm Tucker. I remember two finals in Thomond under 12 and 14 City Cup. We were beaten by at least thirty points in each game...

The New Year has come and we are all looking forward to the rest of 2012. It’s popular around this time of year to make resolutions. I never make new years resolution as I have found that I never keep them and it’s not good to start a New Year on a negative (That’s my story).Around this time of the year people like to consult astrologers, the stars and tarot readings to try and find out what’s in store for them in the New Year. I met a man this morning and we were talking about the New Year and he said that if we knew what was in store for us some days we would never get out of the bed....

This time of the year can be a sad time for families. We think of all the lads who are now working overseas and hope they are home for Christmas. I especially think of this year all the lads from Rowanbridge who had to leave Ireland to find work. They were the backbone of the league for years. I hope they are all keeping well. I know they are following the league on the NET. To all the lads that take part each Friday I wish you and your families a happy Christmas. Hopefully the New Year will bring jobs,a new sense of hope in our communities and above all peace to you all. God bless....

His done it again. Just when we settled for two points up stepped Ronan O Gara to repeat his great drop kick of last week. Believe we must believe. When everyone around you is beginning to shake you must believe. Ireland at the moment is not a place that people can believe in. Huge salaries and not just for Bankers but from the leader of the football association in Ireland. John Delaney’s salary is reported to be €400,000. It’s difficult to square this salary with the fact that most Football clubs are finding it difficult to field Schoolboy and Junior teams due to lack of finance. The lack...

I was really worried as I spotted the fog rise and start drifting across the pitches. I thought that we would have to call the final two games off. Fortunately the fog drifted up and down the pitch and eventually went off towards Clonlara. Talking about Clonlara I was very sad to hear of two young lads from the Clonlara area who play for Stonecutters who are off to Australia this week. Senan Nihill and Tommy Lynch played for the past few years with the Cutters and it’s a sign of the times that young lads have to emigrate to earn a living. We wish them the best of luck and sincerely hope that...
